Troubleshooting

Every error message the plugin shows, and how to fix it.

On this page

The window that appears when you click Translate page shows what went wrong. Find the message below.

"Pick a target language first."

Choose the language to translate into in the language list at the top left of the editor. The button stays grey while the original language is selected.

"Nothing left to translate"

Every string on the page already has a translation. To replace earlier machine translations, tick Redo from scratch. If the page looks untranslated, wait for the preview to finish loading, then try again.

"HTTP 401" or "HTTP 403 ... Check your API key."

The key is wrong, deleted or restricted. Copy it again from the provider console with no spaces, check it belongs to the provider you selected, and check billing or free-tier access is active.

"HTTP 404 ... Model tried: ..."

The model ID does not exist for your account. Open the provider tile and clear Model (optional) to use the default.

"HTTP 429 ... Rate limit reached or no credit left."

You reached the provider's limit per minute or per day, or your credit ran out. Wait and try again; strings already translated are kept. On free tiers, daily limits can be low. Add credit or enable billing for larger sites, or lower Requests at the same time in Settings.

"The provider is busy."

The provider returned a temporary error (HTTP 500 to 504). The plugin already retried once. Wait a minute and click Translate page again.

"Could not reach the AI provider from this server."

Your host blocks outgoing HTTPS requests. Ask your host to allow connections to the provider's address (listed in the plugin's readme under External services).

"The AI provider took too long."

Lower Characters per request in Settings, then try again.

"Browser not supported" (Free basic)

Free basic needs Chrome or Edge on a desktop computer. Use one of those, or set up an AI provider.

"Wrong script or Chinese variant" warning

The result looks like the wrong alphabet or the wrong Chinese variant. Click Undo last run, then translate again with another model or provider. For Chinese, check that the language in TranslatePress is the variant you want (for example Chinese (Taiwan) for Traditional).

Some strings were skipped

The window lists strings whose translation changed HTML tags, links or placeholders. They are left untranslated so your page does not break. Translate them by hand, or try another provider.

The live page still shows the original

Clear your site cache and any CDN cache, and check you are on the language URL (for example /es/).
