Free basic and local models
Translate with no paid key: the browser translator, free tiers, and local models for testing.
On this page
You can use the plugin without paying for an API key.
Free basic (no key)
Free basic uses the translator built into Chrome and Edge on desktop. It is active as soon as you install the plugin.
- The text is translated on your computer. Nothing is sent to an AI service or to MeloTools.
- The first time you use a language pair, the browser may download a language pack. A progress message shows the download.
- Quality is basic. Review the result, and use an AI provider for important pages.
- Firefox, Safari and mobile browsers are not supported. The editor shows "Browser not supported" in that case.
Free tiers of AI providers
Gemini and Groq offer free tiers with limits. They give better quality than Free basic. Free tiers can use your text to improve the provider's products, so avoid them for confidential content. See Gemini and Groq.
Local models (test sites only)
For testing, you can connect a model running on your own computer with Ollama or LM Studio. Add to wp-config.php:
define( 'OCAT_ALLOW_LOCAL_LLM', true );
define( 'OCAT_LOCAL_LLM_URL', 'http://127.0.0.1:11434/v1' );
For LM Studio use http://127.0.0.1:1234/v1. A Local AI tile then appears. If WordPress runs in Docker, use http://host.docker.internal:11434/v1 and start Ollama with OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0:11434.
Never enable this on a public site.
Good practice
- Translate one short page and read the result.
- Compare it with an AI provider on the same page.
- Fix important strings by hand in TranslatePress.
