Gemini is made by Google. You use your own API key, and Google bills you directly for what you translate.

Get a key

  1. In WordPress, go to Settings > MeloTools AI Translation and click the Gemini tile.
  2. Click Open key page. It opens aistudio.google.com/apikey.
  3. Sign in, create a key with a clear name (for example your site name) and copy it.
  4. Set a spending limit in the console if one is offered.

Gemini has a free tier and does not need a card to start. On the free tier, Google may use your prompts to improve its products, so do not translate confidential content with it.

Add the key

  1. Paste the key into API key.
  2. Leave Model (optional) empty to use the default, or enter another model ID from the provider.
  3. Click Save and activate, then Test connection.

The key is encrypted and saved to your user account only. See Security.

Cost and limits

The free tier has limits per minute and per day for each model, set by Google. Older models can have very low free daily limits, which is why the plugin uses gemini-flash-lite-latest by default. When a limit is reached, the plugin shows "HTTP 429 ... Rate limit reached". Wait until the limit resets, or enable billing in Google AI Studio for larger sites.

Translate one page first, then check usage in the provider console to estimate the cost of the whole site.

Remove or replace a key

Click the tile, then Remove key. If a key may have leaked, delete it in the provider's console first, then save a new one.
