Troubleshooting

Common problems with MeloTools Image Optimizer and how to work through them.

Work through these checks in order.

The settings page does not load

  1. Check for a PHP error in your hosting error log.
  2. Disable other optimisation or caching plugins for a test.
  3. Confirm you run WordPress 6.5 or newer and PHP 7.4 or newer.

WebP or AVIF is "not supported by this server"

The plugin needs Imagick or GD with that format enabled. Ask your host to enable Imagick or GD with WebP or AVIF support. WebP is available on most hosts.

An image was skipped

  • Animated images are skipped.
  • Images over 40 megapixels are skipped to protect your server.
  • If "Skip results that are not smaller" is on, a converted file that would be larger than the original is not kept.

Images are not getting smaller

  • Check the quality settings.
  • Open the MeloTools column in Media > Library and confirm the image shows a saving.
  • Check that your cache or CDN is not serving old files. Purge them and test again.

WebP or AVIF does not show on the site

  1. Make sure "Serve to visitors" is set to picture tags.
  2. Purge site, server and CDN caches. LiteSpeed Cache is purged automatically; other caches are not.
  3. Test in a current browser.
  4. Check that your theme does not style img in a way that conflicts with a wrapping <picture> element.

Images look worse

Raise the quality setting and optimise the image again. Logos, screenshots and images with text usually need higher quality than photos. Restore original brings back the original at any time.
