Quick start

Optimize your first images with MeloTools Image Optimizer.

This page walks you through a first run on a few images. Try a few before you work through your whole library.

Step 1: choose a few test images

Pick a handful of images that represent your site, such as a large hero photo, a PNG graphic and a typical blog image.

Step 2: check the settings

Go to Media > MeloTools Optimizer. The defaults are a good start: WebP is created at quality 82, and lighter files are served with picture tags. Turn on AVIF if your server supports it. Read Settings for what each option does.

Step 3: optimise

Open Media > Library and switch to the list view. Next to each image, the MeloTools column shows its status: click Optimise. You can also open an image and use the MeloTools panel in its details.

Images are optimised one at a time, when you click. There is no limit on how many you optimise.

Step 4: check the result

  1. Compare the file sizes shown in the MeloTools column.
  2. Look at the images on the live page at normal size and on a high-density screen.
  3. Check that transparent PNGs still look right.
  4. Re-run your page speed test and compare.

If you are not happy, Restore original puts the original file back, and Remove converted deletes the lighter copies.
