Overview
What the MeloTools Image Optimizer plugin does for WordPress and how it fits with MeloTools.
MeloTools Image Optimizer is a free WordPress plugin that makes your Media Library lighter. It creates WebP and AVIF versions of your images on your own server and serves them to visitors whose browsers support them. Your originals stay safe.
What it does
- Converts JPEG and PNG images to WebP and AVIF, including every thumbnail size.
- Optionally recompresses the original files, with a backup and a Restore button.
- Serves the lighter files with picture tags, so older browsers, feeds and social scrapers still get the original.
- Never rewrites your posts or database: image URLs do not change.
How you use it
You optimise images one at a time, whenever you choose: any image already in your Media Library, old or new. There is no limit on how many images you optimise, no account and no credits.
Bulk optimisation of the whole library and automatic optimisation of new uploads are not part of the free plugin. They are planned for MeloTools Premium, and you can tell us if you would use them.
Where it runs
Everything runs on your own web server, using Imagick or GD. Images never leave your site, and the plugin does not contact any external service.
Who it is for
- Site owners who want faster pages and better Core Web Vitals.
- Agencies that optimise images for client sites.
- Photographers and stores with large image libraries.
What to expect
Smaller image files usually mean faster loading, and faster loading helps Largest Contentful Paint (LCP). Results depend on your images, theme, hosting and caching.
