Settings
Every setting in MeloTools Image Optimizer, its default and what it does.
Version: 1.2.1Last updated
All settings are on one page: Media > MeloTools Optimizer.
How to optimise
A short reminder on the page: optimise images one at a time from Media > Library in list view, or from the MeloTools panel in an image's details. A line below it tells you that bulk and automatic optimisation are planned for MeloTools Premium.
Formats
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| WebP | On | Creates a .webp copy next to each image and its thumbnails. |
| AVIF | Off | Creates an .avif copy. Smaller files, slower to produce. Only available if your server can write AVIF. |
Converted copies are saved next to the original, for example photo.jpg.webp.
Quality
| Setting | Default | Range |
|---|---|---|
| WebP | 82 | 40 to 100 |
| AVIF | 60 | 20 to 100 |
| JPEG | 82 | 40 to 100 (used when recompressing originals) |
Lower quality gives smaller files but can add visible artifacts. Photos usually tolerate more compression than logos, screenshots and text on images.
Behaviour
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Compress originals | Off | Also recompresses the original file. A backup of every file is kept in a private folder inside uploads and used by Restore. Recompression always starts from the backup, so quality never degrades over repeated runs. |
| Serve to visitors | Picture tags | Browsers that support AVIF or WebP get the lighter file, everyone else gets the original. "Off" keeps the files without serving them. |
Safety
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Skip results that are not smaller | On | Keeps the original if a converted file would be larger. |
| Remove EXIF and GPS data | On | Strips metadata from generated files. |
| Delete files on uninstall | Off | When on, converted files and backups are deleted if you uninstall the plugin. |
How to choose settings
- Start with the defaults.
- Change one setting at a time and check the result on a few images.
- Turn on Compress originals only if you are comfortable with the backup and Restore flow.
