Short answers to common questions.
Which image formats does it support?
It converts JPEG and PNG images to WebP and AVIF. HEIC is not supported.
Is there a limit on the number of images?
No. There are no credits or monthly limits, and every thumbnail size is included.
Does it need an account?
No. There is no MeloTools account, API key or external service.
Does it cost anything?
The plugin is free. Bulk and automatic optimisation are planned for MeloTools Premium, which is not available yet. You can tell us if you would use them.
Can it optimise my whole library at once, or new uploads automatically?
Not in this plugin: images are optimised one at a time, when you choose.
Are my images stored on a server?
Only on your own. Everything is processed on your web server, and nothing is sent to MeloTools.
Are my original images deleted?
No. Converted files are saved next to the original. If you turn on Compress originals, a backup of each file is kept in a private folder and can be restored from the Media Library.
Can I restore my original images?
Yes. Use Restore original in the MeloTools column or the MeloTools panel of an image.
Will my image URLs change?
No. Nothing is rewritten in posts, pages or the database. Visitors get lighter files through picture tags.
Will it make my site faster?
Smaller images usually load faster, and that can help Core Web Vitals such as LCP. Results depend on your images, theme, hosting and caching, so measure before and after.
Does it work with caching and CDN plugins?
Yes. Picture tags are part of the page HTML, so no server rewrite rules or special CDN setup are needed. LiteSpeed Cache is purged automatically after each change. With other page caches, purge after optimising. See Troubleshooting.
What happens if I uninstall?
Settings are removed. Converted files and backups stay unless you ticked the delete-on-uninstall option. Your site keeps working either way.
Where do I get help?
Start with Troubleshooting, then ask in the WordPress.org support forum.
