This tutorial shows a safe workflow to translate a site: set up TranslatePress, add your provider key, translate a pilot page, then roll out in groups.

What you need

  • A WordPress site with TranslatePress installed.
  • The MeloTools AI Translation for TranslatePress plugin.
  • Chrome or Edge on desktop for Free basic (no key), or an API key from Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Groq.
  • A site backup.

Step 1: plan your languages and pages

Decide which languages you need first. List your ten most important pages. Translate those before the long tail of older posts.

Step 2: set up TranslatePress

Add your languages in TranslatePress and enable the language switcher. Check that a manual translation of one short string works before you add AI.

Step 3: install the plugin and add your key

  1. Install the plugin.
  2. Go to Settings > MeloTools AI Translation. Free basic is active straight away. For better quality, click a provider tile. See Providers.
  3. Click Open key page, create a key, paste it into API key and click Save and activate, then Test connection. Keep the key private.

Step 4: translate a pilot page

Choose a short, low-risk page. Open it, click Translate Site in the admin bar, choose the language, pick your provider and click Translate page. Then review the result in the TranslatePress editor. Check headings, buttons, brand names, and links.

Step 5: compare and adjust

If the result is not good enough, try another provider on the same page with Redo from scratch ticked; your own edits are kept. Add brand and product names to Words to keep as they are in the plugin settings, and describe your tone under About your site.

Step 6: roll out in groups

Translate your key pages in small groups. Review each group, then continue. Watch your usage in the provider console as you go.

Step 7: review and publish

Ask a native reader to check important pages. Clear your caches, then check the live site in each language.

Keep it up to date

When you change source pages, update the translations. See Translating pages and Choose an AI provider and keep API costs low.
